Sequoyah Regional Library System
The Sequoyah is a monthly publication of the Sequoyah Regional Library System.

Dear SRLS Community,

Fall has arrived and I am excited for you to discover everything happening at your public libraries this October. Our library calendar of events features plenty of spooky (and not so spooky) programming to help adults, teens, children, and families start feeling festive. We’ve got Halloween Bashes, pumpkin games and crafts, and some insightful Sequoyah Knowledge Base sessions. National Friends of Libraries Week starts October 16, so please consider dropping by one of our Friends Book Stores (open during library service hours), thank our Friends members for all that they do, and consider becoming a Library Friend yourself! One of the most impactful ways you can support our libraries is to join our Friends of the Library. Our Friends of the Libraries groups work behind the scenes to support our community connections. We’re ready to welcome you to your library to join us in some fall festivities!

Celebrate National Friends of Libraries Week!
National Friends of Libraries Week is October 16-22. Our Friends volunteer their time to assist with library fundraising efforts, advocate for library services, and coordinate the libraries’ book sales. Visit your library in October to learn about becoming a member of the Friends in your county. It’s a great way to support your local library and make a few new friends of your own!

Friends of the Public Libraries Bookstores
The Friends of the Gilmer County Library Book Store is open for business each day during the Gilmer County Library’s regular service hours. The Woodstock Public Library Book Store, operated by the Friends of the Cherokee County Public Libraries, is also open for business each day during the Woodstock Public Library’s regular service hours. Visit our Friends of the Library webpageto learn more about becoming a member of the Friends in your county.

On the second Friday and Saturday of each month, the Woodstock Public Library’s  Book Store is having a “live” in-person sale featuring special items in addition to their normal inventory. Browse DVDs, CDs, book sets, recent releases, and more! Friends volunteers will be present to accept payments, make change, and take donations. To make donation arrangements, contact staff@cherokeefol.org.

Creepin’ It Real with Library Halloween Programming!
SRLS libraries are exploring “boo-tiful” opportunities for everyone (kids, teens, and adults) to celebrate fall and Halloween - at no cost! With awesome events including a Fall Fun Fest, Halloween costume accessory crafts, guides to decorating and cooking with pumpkins, our annual Boo Bashes, and a special pumpkin spice taste-testing get-together for teens. For event dates, times, additional info, and our full schedule, visit our library calendar of events.

Getting the Community Library Carded!
September was National Library Card Sign-Up Month! We enjoyed interacting with you this month, both inside the library and outside in the community. We want to thank everyone who visited the library, had fun at a library program, used a library service, signed up for a new library card, and spread the word to a friend (or two) to promote the value of their library!

Sequoyah Regional Library System would also like to thank these local organizations for their invaluable support in spreading the word about Library Card Sign-Up Month in September:

Pickens County Library Reopening Announcement!
Our Pickens County Library in Jasper, which has undergone renovation and expansion since summer of 2021, will be reopening to the public this December. While supply chain issues and lead times caused a slight delay in the construction project’s original completion window, the newly renovated Pickens County Library building will be open to offer full library service. During construction, a temporary library location called Pickens Grab & Go is available inside the Mountain Education Charter High School building at 339 West Church Street. To view additional updates and operating hours of Pickens Grab & Go, visit our Pickens County Library Project webpage and FAQ

Gilmer County Library’s Large-Format Scanning Service!
Our Gilmer County Library has debuted a new in-house large-format scanning service which provides equipment for visitors to scan images of any size up to 12”x17” in both color and black-and-white. This scanning service is available, at no cost, to anyone in the community with a library card in good standing. Appointments to use the large-format scanner can be booked by contacting or visiting the Gilmer County Library  on a first-come, first served basis. This service is made possible in part by a grant awarded by Faith Hope and Charity.

October is TeenTober!
October is TeenTober, a nationwide celebration of the teens who keep our libraries awesome. Whether it’s with books, free programming, or our Teen Advisory Board (TAB), the library strives to be a safe space for teens to learn new skills and fuel their passions. Our TAB helps plan library teen events, select materials, and earn volunteer hours during programming (which look great on college applications). Teens can hop over to our Teen Hub  to find book lists and get information about the library’s teen services.

Need Help from the Library? “Ask Us!”
Our libraries have launched a new service called “Ask Us!” Sessionswhich allow visitors to receive one-on-one help by reserving time (up to 30 minutes per session) with a library staff member in person, by phone, or virtually. Sessions can be reserved by calling your library or by visiting SequoyahRegionalLibrary.org and clicking “Contact Us”. Our staff can help you learn to use library technology, access e-Library services, learn basic computer skills, and more. Normally librarians help people find books, but this is your chance to “book” a librarian!
